Manage Your Symptoms with a GERD Diet

Some people experience the symptoms of GERD, but mistake it for heartburn.  This is because the symptoms of both are very similar.  The biggest difference between the two is the severity.  GERD is much more severe.  Not only that, but it can have disastrous consequences if it goes unchecked.  When you have heartburn, you may feel a bit of discomfort, but you’ll be fine.  This is not the case with GERD.  Not only will the pain feel much worse, it will also create permanent damage to your esophagus.

GERD happens when the valve at the connection between the esophagus and the stomach goes faulty.  When it should stay closed, it opens and lets harmful stomach acid into the esophagus and throat.  This part of your body cannot handle the affects of the acid, and the area will get damaged.  If it gets damaged enough, there are serious side effects.  GERD creates a much higher risk for esophageal cancer, and many people contract this illness because of the damage they incur from their GERD.

The best way to avoid these severe health problems is to get your illness in check.  If you let yourself be healthy and you avoid the things that bring on your GERD symptoms, you will have a much happier time.  You will also have a much smaller chance that you obtain esophageal cancer.  While doctors can help you with this, you can often do it on your own when you get on a proper GERD diet.

There are some foods that aggravate the condition.  It can be different for everyone, but there are some foods and drinks that they all have in common.  Most people get severe GERD symptoms when they consume a lot of vitamin C.  Because of this, you should avoid foods and drink that have a lot of citrus.  Cutting these out of your diet for GERD will lessen the negative effects of the disease.

Some people also get an adverse reaction when they drink coffee.  This can be tough on a lot of people because coffee has become such a staple for the working class.  They think they need it to get a hold of their day.  If you have GERD, you pay a price by drinking it since your symptoms will be much worse when you do.  Try to avoid drinking this.  You will be happy that you did.

Try to avoid eating very large meals.  Some people have found that their GERD acts up a lot right after a meal like this.  This is because there is so much food in your stomach that it pushes more stomach acid out and into your esophagus.  Instead, work on a diet that consists of many smaller meals instead of just a few big ones.  This is especially important for dinner since GERD symptoms tend to be worse at night and during bedtime.

If you keep your diet in check, you can drastically reduce the symptoms that you get with GERD.  Some people have even found that their symptoms are completely eliminated.  If that is the case for you, you should still keep this diet up.  Often, these same people get their symptoms again if they go back to drinking orange juice or coffee, or eating large meals.

GERD is usually a life illness.  You never can truly get rid of it once you have it.  It can be managed, though.  With a good diet, you can hope for a life that is not plagued with the pain of this disease.  You can also avoid the trouble of contracting esophageal cancer, which might occur if you took this condition lightly.
